During covid isolation, I relied heavily on grocery delivery, always requesting paper not plastic. I am attracted to the paper bag’s construction and seams. When filleted, they reveal beautiful portions like an Asian scroll. Gesso them, and you’ll get an amazing, unprecious surface. I love the wabi sabi nature of the seams and my imperfectly cut edges. I coat the gesso with ground for pastels to get an interesting tooth. I use walnut ink. While painting my big paintings, both my piano practice and ink gesture drawings serve as warm up exercises... keeping the hand and eye loose.
